Alan Charlton has presented on Viking (eight cruises), Cunard (two), Crystal (two), and Fred Olsen (two). He has a further Viking cruise in autumn 2023.
He was a British Diplomat for 35 years including Ambassador to Brazil, Deputy Ambassador to the US, Deputy Ambassador to Germany and earlier Deputy Political Adviser to the British Commandant in the British Sector of Berlin, First Secretary to Jordan, Bosnia Contact Group Representative/Director of South East Europe at the Foreign Office, Israel Desk Officer; he was involved in diplomacy involving all parts of the world. He was made a Companion of Order of St Michael and St George - CMG - presented by Prince now King Charles (also awarded to Ian Fleming and Daniel Craig), and a companion of the Royal Victorian Order (presented by Queen Elizabeth II).
He is Deputy Chair and a Trustee of Canning House, a London think tank promoting links with Latin America and Iberia. He was for six years a Governor of De Montfort University Leicester and of Sherborne School. He is now a volunteer with The Samaritans and writes books including "Shaking My Briefcase - Diplomatic Stories" and "Apollo Cokkinis, from Odessa to Dorking - an extraordinary Life": he has sold and dedicated copies on ships.
He presents on history/international relations and interesting people - his favourite among the latter is the universal hero Robin Hood (he is from Nottingham). He is always ready to add to my long list of presentations on new subjects. He speaks to the audience without notes, a style which seems well received. He looks to make presentations entertaining as well as Interesting and am delighted by the positive comments from guests.

Since 2015, I have lectured 8 times on Viking Oceans with another scheduled in the autumn; twice on Cunard; twice on Fred Olsen; twice on Crystal. I have been sticking to Viking in recent years. I lecture on history, international relations, diplomacy and on figures such as Robin Hood.
