BIOGRAPHY
Barney Broom works in the film industry. As a writer/director he has won awards for his work, having made commercials, documentaries for both TV and cinema. In 2002/03 Barney was involved in the Borobudur Ship Expedition sailing a replica vessel across the Indian Ocean in the wake of 8th century Indonesian migration to Africa. The documentary produced entitled Braving the Cape was sold to Discovery. As well as presenting his series of talks on the British Film Industry and the history of Hollywood, work is currently underway adapting LUST FOR POWER for a proposed television drama series.

Barney is a member of BAFTA and the Director’s Guild of Great Britain. As an author, Barney has written five novels (https://amzn.to/3ySPShi)

The Six Hollywood talks
History of Hollywood entitled Hollywood - Lust for Power
The story of Louis B. Mayer, Sam Goldwyn, Cecil B. DeMille - the men behind the studios and their stars.

1. The Flickers:
Early films - origins of Hollywood to end of WW1 (Douglas Fairbanks/Mary Pickford/Charlie Chaplin).

2. The Silently Roaring Twenties.
The would-be movie moguls building their studios making silent films. Garbo/John Gilbert stars - Irving Thalberg and the creation of MGM

3. Sound and All that Jazz
1928: Al Jolson - talkies. Innovators in sound pictures the emergence of Warner Bros. The Great Depression and musicals - Busby Berkeley

4. Gone with the Wind and Another War
The producing of GWTW. Vivien Leigh/Scarlett O'Hara: WW2 propaganda films (Casablanca). The studios are still all powerful but led by the likes of the formidable Bette Davis and Olivia De Havilland who challenge their contracts the studio heads are challenged.

5. Decline and Fall
Changes in the system. The moguls aging, fail to adapt to the emergence of television. Ultimately removed from their seats of power.

6. The Phoenix Rises
The last of the original moguls Darryl Zanuck passing in 1979 the presentation looks at Hollywood's changing role in today's world. What happened to the studios? How they changed and what changed them (technology). Steve Jobs and Apple. The Movie Brats - now established
Hollywood figures (Spielberg etc) and why Tinsel Town remains the global media capital.


Five talks on the British Film Industry

1. Origins, Style & Tech
William Frieze Green inventing a camera and beginnings of British cinema. How British films style is different to America's. Technical proficiency - the fact that apart from Americans, the UK has won more Oscars than all other countries in the world combined.

2. Britain at War
Cinema was emerging in WW1 - British films makers at the front; how The Battle of the Somme showed to 20 million people and was a major commercial success. WW2 In Which We Serve (Noel Coward) Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's films (A Matter of Life and Death). How films played a major propaganda role.

3. BAFTA and David Lean
Lean's editing origins and early B/W films. His involvement with Carol Read and others founding the British Academy. Lean's great motion pictures Bridge over the River Kawai, Lawrence of Arabia etc.

4. Kitchen Sink & Carry On
The 60s - not being able to compete with Hollywood blockbusters financially, the emergence of low budget B/W gritty films - The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (Tom Courtney) Saturday Night, Sunday Morning - Albert Finney/Rachel Roberts. At the same time the Carry On films were being produced – all 31 of them!

5. North London Chariots
David Putnam, Alan Parker and resurgence of British Film talent (High Hudson, Ridley Scott etc). The impact commercials have on their films, and the success of British directors in today's international film world.
