BIOGRAPHY
Stuart is a regular public speaker at astronomy societies around the country, and has presented more than once at the Royal Institution in London. He has a relaxed, humorous presentation style, and has frequently been commended for his depth of understanding and his detailed responses to audience questions.

Stuart has enjoyed a diverse career in the UK space sector. In 2018, he founded his own space consultancy company, SJE Space Ltd, after spending 16 years with the UK Ministry Of Defence, and 14 years with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL). For part of this time he also "moonlighted" as a GCSE Astronomy evening class teacher.

In 2005, TopSat, a record-breaking surveillance satellite which Stuart conceived, was launched, This satellite also formed the focus of a display in the space gallery at the Science Museum in London

Stuart's recently published book “Space Traffic Control”, describes the measures needed to maintain the space environment and protect satellites from both natural hazards and man-made threats.

Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in satellite constellation design, and has been a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society for more than 25 years.

Somewhat implausibly, he also has the good fortune to belong to a scuba diving club which has several astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin, as members.

PRESENTATIONS
1. THE FUTURE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD
How will space technology affect our lives over the next two decades? Find out how advances in satellite design will enable radical new capabilities in orbit.

2. MYSTERIES OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Our space missions have taught us much about the corner of the universe in which we live, but have also revealed much that remains mysterious. Come and find out what we still DON’T understand about the solar system.

3. HOW ASTRONOMERS CAN SAVE THE WORLD
Our planet faces various hazards from space, including major eruptions on the Sun and rogue asteroids that might collide with us. Learn how astronomers can save us from the fate that befell the dinosaurs.

4. SPACE TRAFFIC CONTROL
Our planet is surrounded by an increasing population of space junk. This talk will explain why this is such a problem, and how we might go about solving it.

5. HOW TO BUILD A SATELLITE
Ever wondered what technologies are involved in building and launching a satellite? You’re guaranteed to leave this talk as a budding rocket scientist!

6. EXOPLANETS
One of the hottest topics in astronomy right now. Discover how planets are detected around other stars, and what we can learn about them using ground-based and space-based telescopes.

7. ARCHAEO-ASTRONOMY
The builders of Stonehenge and the ancient Greeks knew a surprising amount about the heavens. Come and find out how the ancient Britons aligned their monuments to the heavens; and how the Greeks estimated the size of the Earth, the size of the Moon, and worked out the distance between them.

8. MILITARY SPACE TECHNOLOGIES
Can the Americans read your car number plate from space? Find out the truth about how satellite technologies have become the “high ground” in military affairs over the past 30 years.

9. THE MOON, MARS, OR BEYOND?
Should we send robots or astronauts to explore the solar system? And if humans do venture beyond the Earth, where should we send them?

10. ASTRONOMY 1.01
Don’t know your Aries from your Draco? Learn how to tell a neutron star from a white dwarf, and never be confused by a black hole again.

11. WILLIAM HERSCHEL AND THE RINGS OF URANUS
Did William Herschel spot the ring system around the planet Uranus in the late 1700s, roughly 180 years before their “official” discovery? Listen to the evidence and decide for yourself.

12. IS THERE ENOUGH SPACE IN SPACE?
In the past few years it has become increasingly apparent that changes in the nature of astronomical observations and the increasing numbers of satellites in orbit around the Earth are inevitably going to result in contention. The talk will explain why these changes are happening, and provide an insight into some of the measures that could be taken to alleviate the problems. Be prepared for a wide-ranging talk that will encompass topics as diverse as satellite thermal control, the business case for the OneWeb constellation, Stonehenge, and the Fermi Paradox.
CRUISE HISTORY / EXPERIENCE
I was engaged to provide Astronomy lectures on the Viking Cruise Ship Jupiter, in April 2021, but this was cancelled due to Coronavirus. I have been providing talks for astronomy societies around the UK for many years
